It's Coming....Monterey Motorsports Reunion
As you can see from the countdown clock, we're only weeks away from from one of the premier automotive events in the world. The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion (more commonly, "The Historics") at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is entering its 58th year. The Reunion is a living museum with hundreds of historic, classic and often priceless sports and racing cars in attendance. Unlike a car show of trailer queens, every car at the Reunion must race on the track. This is one of the only places we know of where historic and sometimes one-off creations, iconic racers, pre-war grand prix, TransAm Can-Am and international endurance racing cars are driven to the limit (mostly), and in some cases, by the very personalities that made them notable.
Every year this event features a specific car, car make or driving personality. Last year's event featured the history, cars and designs of Maserati. This year's event will feature the 50th Anniversary of the iconic Shelby GT350 Mustang. For the inexperienced, this means that if you're a Ford or Mustang or Shelby fan, all you're going to see before you faint are hundreds and hundreds of fat rally stripes! And the best part is that (inside the paddock area) you're not going to hear your peers talk about kits clones or authenticity...they're real....they're real, and they're beautiful! (We make no such claims about the ponycars in the parking lots, but this being a Shelby related event, many of them will also be the real deal)
We promise that whether you are a new fan of motorsports or just getting the bug, you will not be disappointed. Actually, the newcomer and the veteran will both be overwhelmed by the options on the menu. We've been attending this event for over 15 years, and our excess of "Historics" photographs (yes, film based images too) alone was probably the impetus for the creation of TLP in the first place.
As if this isn't enough.....
The Reunion coincides with the Pebble Beach Concourse, The Quail Lodge-Motorsports Gathering http://signatureevents.peninsula.com/en/motorsports/motorsports.html, Concorso Italiano http://concorso.com/, RM Auctions / Sotheby's www.rmauctions.com, and a host of car auctions that will undoubtedly break records this year. We also recommend visiting central Carmel and downtown Monterey on Friday and Saturday night as the streets become an exotic car paradise where Italian exotics outnumber domestic daily drivers. We will do a post in the next few weeks about things to see on the street and in the parking lots on Historics weekend.
