Team Penske: 50 Years of Greatness
A few days ago Team Penske celebrated its 50th year in auto racing, which has encapsulated 27 national racing championships, 16 Indianapolis 500 wins, two Daytona 500 victories by a total of 85 drivers. From sports cars and NASCAR to IndyCar, Team Penske has won everything in racing in the United States. It is very likely that any race you tune into on a hot summer weekend has a Penske car running in it, and probably running near the top. Team Penske has had so much success in racing that "Penske" is synonymous with winning.
Team Penske has been such a consistent competitor over the last 5 decades that even historic racing events, such as the Monterrey Motorsports Reunion, typically have cars that raced for Penske covering several decades and racing series.
We can't lie, and we won't hide it....we're fans of Penske. Roger, the team's namesake (a.k.a. "The Captian") is one of the most formidable forces in modern motorsport. He is uncompromising, unflappable, unapologetic, doesn't suffer fools and is always (ALWAYS) focused on winning. If you're curious about the man and the team, we've included some video and pictures from our archives. We'd also recommend that any fan of the wheeled arts read the book "The Unfair Advantage," by Paul Van Valkenburgh which tells the story of Penske and the late Mark Donohue as they competed in NASCAR, Trans-Am, Indy, Can-Am and more. Their partnership alone represents more modern racing DNA than any other relationship we can think of. Hell, if you don't want to try your hand at starting a race team or become a driver after reading The Unfair Advantage, you probably didn't actually read it. We quote it, or cite it in civilized conversation at lease once a week.
Whether you know all of this, or not, take this 50th Anniversary milepost to learn something new or to fortify your existing memories (whether you like Penske or not) about this man and this team. It's all that we love about motorsports and it's good for you!
