F1 is Almost Back!

F1 is Almost Back!

In a little less than a week the 2016 F1 season will begin with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, Australia.  Its an exciting time at TLP as we eagerly await the start of the season.  Will Mercedes continue their dominance?  Has Ferrari found the pace to challenge for the title?  Will McLaren climb out of the basement?

To get you ready for the excitement we have this video of testing from a few weeks ago.  We also have details on the new qualifying format which we frankly don't understand the need for the change or even how its going to work.

New Qualifying Format

Formula One will implement a new, elimination-style qualifying format at the 2016 Formula 1® Rolex Australian Grand Prix after it was approved by the FIA. The new elimination system retains the idea of three separate qualifying segments to decide the grid, albeit under a changed format.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Q1

-16 minutes duration;

- After 7 minutes, the slowest driver is eliminated;

- Slowest driver eliminated every 90 seconds thereafter until the chequered flag;

- 7 drivers eliminated, 15 progress to Q2.

Q2

- 15 minutes duration;

- After 6 minutes, slowest driver eliminated;

- Slowest driver eliminated every 90 seconds thereafter until the chequered flag;

- 7 drivers eliminated, 8 progress to Q3.

Q3

- 14 minutes;

- After 5 minutes, slowest driver eliminated;

- Slowest driver eliminated every 90 seconds thereafter until the chequered flag;

- 2 drivers left in final 90 seconds and fastest of the two gets pole position.
