LeMans: The Dramatic Finish.
With only 3 minutes and 25 seconds left on the timer, the leading Toyota LMP1 would stop on the main straight due to a loss of power. The #2 Porsche 919 would take the lead with one lap to go and claim Porsche's second straight win. After a grueling 23 hours and 56 minutes the cruelty of endurance racing would rear up and swat Toyota from claiming what had seemed liked a victory that was theirs since they had taken the lead the previous day. If you really want to see the contrast in victory and sorrow we posted a video at the end of this article with dramatic music that really sets the tone.
Ford Wins!
The Ford GT driven by Dirk Muller and teammates Joey Hand and Sebastien Bordais (Ironically, this "American" effort piloted by a German, a Frenchman and an American) brought home victory for Ford 50 years after the original GT40s did the same. The #68 Ford GT of Chip Ganassi Racing would take the win in the LM GTE Pro class, beating the second place Risi Competizione Ferrari 488GTE. While many Ford fans thought a great finish at LeMans was a done deal the fact is that to win in your first race season is an incredible achievement that very few can claim to have done.
