Early Bird Concours
A few weeks have passed since the collective descent into Car Week festivities and the three day adventure that we keeps providing more memories. While shifting through our thousands of photos… yes that is correct, thousands, we found something that we had almost forgot. Shame on us!
As we documented in our piece on attending the Gooding & Company Pebble Beach Auction we like to get there when the doors open, and in reality we usually arrive well before that happens. As we wait for the doors to open at Gooding we typically kill some time by walking amongst the rows and rows of haulers that make the Pebble Beach Concours and associated events possible. This particular parking lot is where the cars will be loaded and unloaded, and often in the morning hours, automotive rarities will be be slowly rolled from the back of these large trucks.
The first thing we noticed was the lack of activity and that few if any cars were being unloaded that morning. A few times we double checked our watches to remember if we had somehow arrived earlier than in previous years. It appeared that we were going to be disappointed. Then, near the end of the last row of haulers was a familiar flash of red from the corner of our eyes. Approaching slowly, we saw an awning style tent connected to the side of the hauler. As we moved closer we found a doorway sized entry into to the tent and and poked our heads inside found seven spectacular Ferraris . While viewing from a safe distance, a man appeared from inside the hauler and said those magic words, “come in a take a look.”
We entered and found ourselves amongst 8 pristine Italian classics that would later appear at the Concours d’Elegance on Sunday.
It was a memorable moment that will stay with us for years to come. Later, we would discover from some online research that the collection we viewed was from Motion Products Inc (MPI) an award winning classic car restoration company specializing in Italian cars. MPI’s restorations have been featured and won awards at the Amelia Island Concours, Ferrari Club of America annual meet and the world famous Pebble Beach Concours.
