Throwback Thursday February 5th Edition
At the 2007 Long Beach Grand Prix fans were treated to a double race weekend as both Indy Car and the American Le Mans Series raced that weekend. I had a media pass so I was shooting track side. It's a hard place to shoot as it was difficult to get shots that had clean background. However, I found this spot were I could look straight ahead and catch the cars as they were coming right toward me. This particular car was the Porsche RS Spyder run by Team Penske, one of the most iconic teams in racing.
The RS Spyder made its debut in the final event of the 2005 American Le Mans Series (ALMS) at Laguna Seca winning its class. It RS Spyder won the ALMS LMP2 Championship in 2006, 2007 and 2008 and took class honours at Le Mans in 2008 and 2009. The outright victory at the 2008 12 Hours of Sebring was the first major victory for Porsche in endurance racing for five years and it was also the first time in 24 years that the non-premier class won the 12 Hours of Sebring overall. Regulation changes for the 2011 season rendered the RS Spyder obsolete, but the technology and development of the RS Spyder set the stage for the Porsche 919.
If you happen to want to buy one you're in luck. Canepa Design has one for sale here.
