Throwback Thursday May 1, 2014

It was 2006 at the Monterey Historic Automobile Races sponsored by Toyota.  Panasonic Toyota Formula 1 team brought their Toyota F1 car (TF106) in order to set the lap record at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. F1 Driver Ricardo Zonta on his second flying lap, set a new record for the modern track layout of 1:07.587, a tenth and a half quicker than Helio Castroneves' previous record, set in 2000 in a Champ Car.  it is unclear if the record has since been broken.

Sadly, Toyota withdrew from F1 at the end of 2009 season.   Estimates are that Toyota spent $300 million per year on their F1 effort never getting a race finish better than second place
